The full history is fascinating, the figures were so successful at launch that Cadbury's
ran out of Cocoa and it was some months before stocks were replenished and the tins and the toys were back on sale. A commercial artist,
Ernest Aris, designed the cubs. He had earlier sold a series of 52 drawings of similar animals to a
cigarette card company and the Cococubs obviously appealed to Cadbury's who had used animals in their advertising for some years. They formed a club with a badge and a newsletter. The club had a secret sign
and a secret code Club members had the opportunity to collect a Leader Bar and a Veteran's Star to attach to the club badge. Ernest also designed Cococub Race games and cut-out houses that could be exchanged
for coupons collected from the tins of Cocoa. |
